resizing images for the web is a very important thing to do for many reasons. first, it will cut down the time your web pages take to load. second it will reduce the data transfer each time someone pulls up your web page, which can save you money. finally, it can make your web page look better.

there are a couple of different programs that come with microsoft windows that can be used to resize your images: microsoft photo editor and microsoft paint. below are instructions for resizing your images using both programs.

microsoft photo editor

1. on your desktop, click on start-->programs-->microsoft office tools-->microsoft photo editor or find the image you would like to resize, right click on that image, choose open with, and then choose microsoft photo editor from the list of programs and skip to step 3.
2. in microsoft photo editor, click on file-->open, at the top of the screen, and browse to the image you would like to resize.
3. your image should now appear on the screen. click on image-->resize, at the top of the screen, and a window with your file size should pop up.
4. modify the width or height to the desired size and click ok. remember that for the web your images should be no wider than 800 pixels which is about 2.5 inches.
5. next click file-->save as, at the top of the screen, and choose where you would like to resave your file.

your new file will now be optimized for the internet and ready to go.

microsoft paint

1. on your desktop, click on start-->programs-->accessories-->paint or find the image you would like to resize, right click on that image, choose open with, and then choose paint from the list of programs and skip to step 3.
2. in paint, click on file-->open, at the top of the screen, and browse to the image you would like to resize.
3. your image should now appear on the screen. click on image-->stretch/skew, at the top of the screen, and a window will pop up.
4. modify the horizontal and vertical percentage in the stretch settings. you must put a percentage less than 100% to reduce the image size, and your percentages must be identical for vertical or horizontal, or the image will become distorted. when finished click ok.
5. click on image-->attributes, at the top of the screen, and a box will pop up that will show you your new image size and dimensions. remember that for the web your images should be no wider than 800 pixels. click ok to close this window and go back to step 3 if the size and dimensions are not correct.
5. when finished, click file-->save as, at the top of the screen, and choose where you would like to resave your file.

your new file will now be optimized for the internet and ready to go.
