Case Study: VIDA Fitness
Back Ground:
VIDA Fitness is a new concept in personal health. Whether you want to cut fat, build muscle, or just bring a bit of balance and flexibility into your life, VIDA can help you discover and achieve your fitness goals. More than just a gym, VIDA is a state-of-the-art fitness facility. Creatively designed on three levels of space, it features cutting edge equipment, smart design, and modern conveniences to deliver a total body experience. Complete with the Oasis Spa, Bang! Salon, and the Health Bar, VIDA is an artful arrangement of activity and atmosphere.
The Problem:
The VIDA concept came to fruition after more than a year of planning with the opening of the first location within the Washington, DC MCI center located at 601 F Street on August 23rd, 2006. During the planning, there were many complex infrastructure issues that needed to come together in order for visitors to be able to walk in the door and scan their finger on a biometric scanner and gain access to all of the state of the art facilities that VIDA has to offer. Aside from building the physical fitness center and salon which takes up over 28,000 square feet on three different levels and includes a unisex day spa with saunas, steam rooms, Japanese soaking tubs, endless pools, and tanning beds, the whole infrastructure from the corporate office to the MCI center location needed to be completely networked and wired with state of the art technology to manage membership, provide secure wireless access to the Internet for visitors, and allow members to perform such tasks as scheduling a class from the Spa room easily by scanning their finger across a biometric scanner and seeing their appointment on a flat screen monitor. Gathering the team of engineers and specialists to coordinate and successfully complete this mission on a very tight deadline was an extremely daunting task.
Solution:
BIS Global was approached in the Spring of 2006 along with several other contractors that were handling the structural network wiring, software vendors, web designers, and an ISP to begin planning for the August 23rd opening date of the first VIDA location. BIS Global was responsible for setting up and maintaining the new VIDA network and coordinating the effort with the different vendors and the VIDA management team. BIS Global provided the engineers and management to successfully coordinate the effort with all of the vendors and the VIDA management team so that on August 23rd, VIDA was able to open its doors and provide service to its customers. BIS Global setup the VIDA Fitness and Bang Salon network and infrastructure using state of the art hardware and software. This included a full biometric user authentication system that allows users to simply scan their finger when they would like to check in or use any of the gym facilities. It also included a fully secured wireless network where users can come and browse the Internet on their laptops or PDAs. Furthermore, the new VIDA location and corporate office can both access all of the membership software via the Internet using a secured network. This allows the different gym locations to be autonomous so that any network or power problems will not affect other locations or the corporate office because the membership software is collocated in BIS Global’ secure data center. BIS Global also took steps to minimize the risk of the network problems including the installation of redundant Internet routers using different ISPs so there are very few single points of failure.
BIS Global will continue to provide support to VIDA for all of its fitness center locations and corporate locations as they grow. Due to the thorough planning and implementation of VIDA’s network infrastructure in a scalable manner, the opening of new locations will be very simple from a technology standpoint and will have no affect on other locations even though they will all access the same membership software.
